Are you #novembernaughty or #novembernice?

Are you looking for that perfect gift? I am obsessed with finding perfect gifts. Honestly, I think Santa Claus has the best job in the world. There is nothing like the feeling of watching someone’s face when they open that perfect gift; they start crying, then I start crying, there is hugging, and laughing, and… Well, it’s what happiness feels like. Now, a perfect gift does not have to be purchased. It can be made.

My favorite present I ever received from my sister was a home-made card where she miss-spelled Happy (“Hapy” — we are immigrants, but really? 🤨.) and told me how much she loved me. Just as she got all the athletic genes, I got all the creative ones — my sister cannot draw a stickman. Art critic would sneer so hard at that card, they would likely dislocate their noses. However, for me it is the thought that counts. (I’m tearing up just thinking about that card, FYI!) I was 18, and I still have that card hanging on my wall. And I would not part with it for all the money in the world… Well, maybe if someone offered enough money for me to purchase my sister a clinic. That would totally be worth it!

Mili Fay's favorite gift.

My sister gave me this card for my 18th birthday. It’s my favorite gift to this day.

My other favorite gift she gave me for New Year’s Day the year I got into Sheridan Animation. It was a cell reproduction of The Little Mermaid singing on the rock. As children, my sister and I reenacted that scene daily for years! The drawing is not a copy of the actual cell used, which made me feel cheated. Glen Keane drew that scene.

Ariel singing on the rock limited edition animation cell.

My sister spent $600 on this present at the time. All her savings!

Part of your world reprise movie still.

The actual cell used in the movie (from Glen Keane’s original animation) has way more movement and is so much better.

I do not know why Disney felt someone else’s drawing would look better, because it does not. In fact, at this stage I think I could draw Ariel better, but the memories that image brings is priceless. Though, at the time the framed cell did have a substantial price: $600 for a fake reproduction (all my sister’s savings). Really, Disney?!!!

The point I’m trying to make is that I really appreciate perfect gifts. However, being an independent artist, these days I do not have the time to make, or cash to purchase perfect gifts for my family and friends. Working independently, all the money I earn goes back to resuscitating my flailing business, and I spend all my free time: working!

“So, this is Christmas, and what have you done?”

Every time I hear these words (and yes, the stores are playing Christmas songs even though it is not yet November!), I feel a stab to my heart. I feel as if I could be better, and as if I could have done more.

I also feel the pain of not being able to conjure up that perfect gift. Am I alone? I think not.

Therefore, with great trepidation, I’ve decided to try something I have not done before. I’ve decided to at least create perfect gifts for my fans. This pre-Holiday season, I will be #novembernice. For those of you who don’t know what it is, #novembernice is the movement by artists (and others) to help exhausted holiday shoppers find that perfect gift for less. For everyone else, it is a chance to remind themselves to be kinder and nicer to others. In return we all get to rack up last minute candy cane points to please Santa (or star, or candle points for whatever supernatural being watches over your personality during the year).

I’m offering 30 (Are 30 too many?) Gift Certificates for 11 x 14 original artwork commission for 80% off (maybe even more than 80% off). In the past, I sold these for $500+, depending on the medium and content. Now, I’m offering an original painting, drawing, etc. for $100. I know artists who sell unlimited, reproduction art prints for more. Am I being crazy, to commit myself for that tiny wage? I will basically be working for a wage that is well below minimum wage, maybe even below sweatshop wage. 🤯

However, if I can make at least one person happy with their gift-giving, I think it will be worth it. Imagine if everyone just helped one person in their life… Maybe my dream of living on the Star Trek TNG Earth (where there are no wars and people get along and are free to pursue their lives as they see fit) might come around in my lifetime.

Click the button for details, and if you would like me to create the artwork before this Holiday Season, contact me ASAP.

Are you #novembernice or #novembernaughty? Let me now in the comments how you intend to brighten someone’s life this Holiday Season. If you are an artist, or a shop owner, slashing your prices like crazy: share! I’m still searching for perfect gifts. 😇

Happy pre-Holiday season and good luck!

Cheers!

#InktoberContest 2017 on Instagram

#InktoberContest 2017 RULES

Wonder Woman: Mili Fay Art Instagram Contest Poster

The hashtag for this event is #InktoberContest please use it when you are commenting about the artwork. #InktoberContest is part of #inktober, a global even where artists are encouraged to create artwork using traditional ink-based tools during the month of October.

My idea is to create ink line-art and color the final image digitally, blending both the traditional and digital mediums, as I have done in the Wonder Woman poster above.

This year I’ve hosted #MerMay and #MuthoJuly contests on Instagram. The rules for this event are similar. THE FIRST PERSON TO COMMENT ON MY INSTAGRAM POST WINS! Though I will try to post daily, my other obligations may prevent me, but I will try to post artwork either at 16:00 h or 19:00 h EDT. What I can promise is that this event will continue until there are 31 Contest Winners.

How it works:

Beginning with the artwork above, I will post an image on Instagram with Information beginning: “🗲 BE THE FIRST to comment, letting me know your favorite superhero/villain, and WIN an illustration of yourself as that character. 🗲”

The first Instagram Follower to comment wins!

The winner needs to send me a head shot, full body with head shot, and a photo of a handwritten note: “I, (full name), give Mili Fay of Mili Fay Art permission to use my image to create a (superhero/supervillain character of your choice). Date and Sign.” This information needs to be sent by 9:00 EDT the following day. The winner can do this via Instagram Direct Message (do not send me images that expire), or by adding images to a Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. folder and sending me a link to that folder via direct message. The clearer the image, the better I can capture you. I also need to see your hair and eye color. KEEP IT RATED G. Leave your clothes on. Do not make this contest creepy, or you will be disqualified.

Additional Rules:

NO DUPLICATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. If someone has already chosen the character of your choice, choose another one — I will not draw 2 Storms. Exception: One of you can choose Wonder Woman.

Please choose world acknowledged superheroes/villains. I think real life superheroes/villains surround us, but for this contest I’m drawing fantasy, made up superheroes/villains.

🌟 This contest is offered at my sole discretion and for fun. I’m under no legal obligations whatsoever. 🌟

The winner will receive: a low-resolution digitally perfected image they can share online, a high-resolution image of the drawing for printing, a Mili Fay Art Copyright License, and a free Kindle Sketchbook of all the art. The winner will also be given an option to purchase the original ink line-art at a significant discount, US$70 (free shipping to Canada and US), prior to its being offered to the public.

Note: I am the sole copyright owner of my creation and can do with it what I will.

If the winner does not send the images by the time indicated above, and the runner up cannot be contacted, I will draw a superhero/supervillain character of my choice.

THIS CONTEST IS OPEN TO EVERYONE INCLUDING THE MERMAY2017 and MYTHOJULY2017 CONTEST WINNERS. If you are under the legal age, by entering this contest you agree that you have your parent’s or guardian’s consent to do so. You also need your parent/guardian to sign your image release note. I will not share your images with anybody and will delete them in due time.

By entering the contest you acknowledge that you have read all the rules and that you will abide by them.

Thank you for reading and thank you for following.

MerMay 2017 Sketchbook Launch!

MerMay 2017 Sketchbook Launch Event Cover

That time has come again; the time when I have finished another book and now am ready to launch it onto the unsuspecting public, like a ship holding the hidden cargo filled with possibilities.

This time the Launch will not be taking place here, but on Social Media: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. I will also not be available throughout the two day, but will drop in sporadically.

So, what do you need to know to enjoy the event to its fullest?

As always there are 2 books, one for those of you who wish to have the collection of sketches bound in a digital book, and the other for those of you who in addition want to see my process and download all the art. Both sketchbooks contain all 31 MerMay drawings in high resolution. The following images showcase the differences:

Throughout the two days, feel free to ask me questions and engage with other Followers on Social Media. I promise to answer everything ASAP. However, one feature you may not wish to miss is a chance to WIN AN ORIGINAL DRAWING OF YOURSELF AS YOUR FAVOURITE SEA CREATURE. To be eligible for the draw all you need to do is answer the two questions by commenting on the appropriate post.

MerMay 2017: Contest and Mili Fay Mermaid!

Did you hear of MerMay? What is MerMay Challenge? Tom Bancroft challenged artists to create a mermaid every day in May.

Since I love mermaids (I was obsessed with Ariel as a kid), I’ve decided to take up Tom Bancroft’s Challenge. However, instead of just creating my own mermaids, I saw this was the perfect opportunity to have the First Mili Fay Art Contest of 2017.

Happening on Instagram: @mili.fay.art

I have not hosted a contest in a while. By participating, you can win an original character design of yourself as a mermaid or another sea creature. You can find out details and rules about the MerMaid2017 Contest on Instagram.

So, join me this month on Instagram, and I hope you have a fun May Day!

Cheers!

Mili Fay Art 2017 Projects Update

There are so many things I wish to do, but I wonder if I could possibly find the time to do them all.

Since you’ve heard from me last, I’ve decided on my projects for 2017:

Warriors of Virtue Epic YA Fantasy Series

Warriors of Virtue Epic YA Fantasy Series will remain the number one priority. Saying this, I’m sorry to inform you that I’m not sure when Episode 5 (the episode that should have been available on March 1st 2017) will be published. After receiving edits from my editor, I’ve decided to rewrite quite a bit of Chapter 13. Currently, that rewrite is being edited. I’m also waiting for the final pair of eyes to check the remaining two chapters.

Meanwhile, I hope you like the new and improved cover art:

Warriors of Virtue Epic YA Fantasy Series Episode 3 Cover Art

Almost Famous Artist’s Interviews

Last month, I’ve stumbled upon the “Occupy Facebook with Art” movement for the second time. I love the idea, but most people feature artists that are already famous. I thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice to feature artists who are just as skilled, but as yet have no huge following?” Personally, I know a lot of amazing artists, and I discovered others on DeviantArt. It would be a shame if you did not discover them, too. To help promote their work (and my own) I’ve decided to create Almost Famous Artist’s Interviews. I will be publishing these as soon as I get an adequate number of responses. I thought to feature them every Monday — to beat the Monday Blues. What do you think?

To qualify, the artist needs to be out of school (or in school but with two professional projects in their portfolio) and trying to make (or making) a living as an artist.

If you would like to be featured, contact me with a link to your website. If I feel you qualify, I’ll contact you back with the interview questions.

Fast Book Reviews

For years, I have been reviewing books on Amazon and Goodreads. I have finally decided to create a blog featuring these reviews. These reviews are for busy people like me, people who do not have a lot of time to spend reading detailed, professional book reviews. I’ve created a format to help you determine if you would like a book at a glance, followed by a few paragraphs expressing my personal feelings about the work. Be sure to check out the FAQ Page for more information.

Mili Fay Art Princesses

Belle/Beauty from Beauty and the Beast

One of the concept sketches for the first painting — Beauty from Beauty and the Beast.

One of the chief reasons I created Mili Fay Art is to use my talents to help the world, by raising money for altruistic organizations. For years, I wanted to create something for I’m a Girl campaign. I have finally decided upon the project: Mili Fay Art Princesses. In between working on Warriors of Virtue, I’ll create traditional paintings featuring princesses. Because of the upcoming move, the first to be featured is Belle/Beauty from Beauty and the Beast. The scene: Belle attacked by wolves. (Decided via social media.)

Fallow my progress on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. If you wish to get a postcard of the final art for FREE join Mili Fay Art Fan Club.

In accordance with Mili Fay Art rules, 30% of all the profits form the project will be donated to I’m a Girl campaign. You do not need to purchase items to help out. If you like what I’m doing: spread the word!

Animals In My Hair Update

"Animals In My Hair" Front Cover

Animals In My Hair was the first book I published. It was created in part to raise funds for wildlife conservation via the Toronto Zoo by donating 30% of the profits. The trouble is that I invested heavily in printing the book and local fairs. As such, I have yet to see any profits. However, I feel horrible for not raising anything for the conservation of animals. Therefore, I’ve made the executive decision to donate 30% of all the profits from each sale from now on. After purchasing the book (or books) I will take away the cost of printing the book (growing constantly due to the interest rate), Gumroad fee, shipping, and packaging, HST (or Amazon fees for the digital book) then from the leftover amount I will take 30% and add that to a donation pot. Once the pot reaches $250 I’ll make the donation to the Toronto Zoo’s Wildlife Conservation and Breeding Program.

Animals In My Hair has received nothing but 5 star reviews since its publication from parents, teacher, reviewers, and children. If you know a child or have a child of your own, you should introduce him/her to this book. If you cannot afford it, you can borrow it from the Toronto Public Library, Brampton Public Library, and Huntsville Public Library. If you would like the book to become available in your local library let me know, and I’ll see if I can make that happen.

I need your help. If you like what I’m doing, follow me on Social Media and spread the word of my existence. I firmly believe art can change the world for the better. Mili Fay Art’s vision statement is: “Together we support the world one artwork at a time.” I cannot do it alone.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Mili

Create Your Own Sketchbook

For those of you wishing to create your own sketchbook, I have created a brief tutorial article here.

A challenge!

I was challenged to sing a bit of The Phantom of the Opera, the musical. Ha-ha. I knew that saying I was a singer was going to come back and bite me in the… However, I did ask if there was something I could do to make this event more fun. Thank you so much to the person who suggested this. For those of you who do not know me, I’m not a trained singer, but I did sing in a choir for a few years. I also prefer being behind the camera, rather than being in front of one. However, I promise that once I get 100+ honest reviews on Amazon (something I sincerely doubt will happen any time soon), I will record myself singing “The Phantom of the Opera” song as requested, squeaky high-notes and all. Thus, I challenge my Challenger (and anyone visiting this page) to pick up the gauntlet. For now, you will just have to be content with this brief recording of “Think of Me”:

The Sketchbook is 50% off on Amazon

You can purchase the sketchbook from Amazon at its 50% of introductory price today and tomorrow. Or you can try your hand at the The Phantom of the Opera Trivia and win the book. For more detailed information on what’s happening today, see my earlier post here.

I will be present throughout the day, so if you have any questions about the sketchbook, Mili Fay Art, or anything you think I may be able to help you with, you can ask them in the comments below. I promise to answer every single question I receive today ASAP.

Without you, this event would not have been fun.

Last, but not least…

There are still some Trivia Questions to be answered. Deadline is Monday, February 6, 2017, 0:01 am EST.

If you have your own Phantom drawings, books,… feel free to add them to the comments.

I forgot to take progress pictures with my phone :-(, but I did screen capture all the digital progress. I’ll post those ASAP.

Thank you again for making this launch fun. I hope to see you all at a future event.

Cheers!

Mili

The Phantom of the Opera Inktober 2016 Sketchbook Launch Party: Scheduled Events

Free Art

The Phantom of the Opera Sketchbook Cover Color Moods

Each of these will be available for download during the day of the event.

To thank everyone who helped me choose a mood for the final cover art, on the day of the event I’m making the other cover art options available, so that everyone can download their favourite.

The Party Discount

The day before the event, the day of the event, and the day after the event both the Regular Edition and Artist’s Edition will be selling for 50% off on Amazon. (Note: Because of Amazon’s policy making the Countdown Deal available only in US and UK, I will manually be changing the prices of the book. For this reason, you may not realise that the book is discounted. The Regular Edition will be on sale from $5.99 to $2.99 US; Artist’s Edition* from $9.99 to $4.99 US.)

Phantom Trivia Game

At the top of each hour I will post a question from The Phantom of the Opera novel by Gaston Leroux to test your Phantom knowledge. The first person to answer this question, wins The Phantom of the Opera Inktober 2016 Sketchbook. If you are the first to answer 3 questions in succession, you’ll win The Phantom of the Opera Inktober 2016 Sketchbook: Artist’s Edition*. You have 10 chances to win. You cannot win more than one book. Answer by Replying to the Question written as a comment at the bottom of the page. I will email you a gift code from Amazon. If you do not claim your gift within the day, the code will be gifted to the next person on the list.

Live Sketching

I will post the Launch Party Page a day in advance. In the comments, I will write: “Live Sketching 01 Request.” If you are quick enough you can reply to this comment with a sketching request. On the day of the event beginning from 10:15 am to 11 am, I will take 45 min (or less) to sketch out your request (I need 15 minutes to check in with the party guests and share the artwork online). Each hour I will post a new Live Sketching Request comment, I will sketch what the first person to reply says. The theme of this event is The Phantom of the Opera. Requests relating to other subjects will be ignored. Though, if you come up with something I love, I may consider your offer if there are no other requests relating to the theme.

Phantom Sketchbook Sample

I’ll have 45 min to create a sketch of your choice. Vote on traditional or digital sketching in the comments.

Currently, we are voting on the Traditional or Digital option. If Traditional wins, I may not be able to record myself sketching live throughout the day, but I will be taking progress pictures that I will share online. If Digital wins, I will record my progress with Camtasia and will make it available online — raw, uncut and unedited. If the program dies on me (it happened before), I’ll post whatever has been saved. You can cast your vote in the comments by writing “traditional” or “digital”. If you are on the following platforms, you can also cast your vote on the Facebook Event Page and on my Deviant Art Poll.

Live Sketching Requests Timeline: This is the time you should be refreshing the webpage, so you can be the first to make your request the moment the comment is posted. You cannot make a request twice. If you do not reply to the comment “Live Sketching (01 – 08) Request” and just post a random comment, your request will be ignored.

01 the day before
02 at 10:15 am
03 at 11:15 am
04 at 12:15 pm
1 pm to 2 pm Lunch
05 at 2:15 pm (this is when I begin sketching request 04)
06 at 3:15 pm
07 at 4:15 pm
08 at 5:15 pm

On the day of the event the guests have one hour to make a request. If no one posts a response by the time I post the following request. I will flip through my copy of The Phantom of the Opera novel and will sketch a random scene.

Q and A

I will be at my computer from 10 am – 1 pm and 2 pm – 8 pm. During that time, feel free to ask me any questions you like. If I’m not busy sketching I will respond immediately. If I am busy, I will respond to your question ASAP.

Special Requests

How can I make my own Kindle Sketchbook for sale?

I’ll answer this question.

Can you sing something from “The Phantom of the Opera” the Musical?

I knew that writing I was a singer in my biography will come to bite me in the…

I’m not a trained singer, but yes, I can sing. However, my voice has not returned since my last bout of flu in December 2016. The high-high notes are just gone. I have been losing my voice to colds and flus so frequently in the past few years that I’ve quit the choir practice.

I did manage to record myself singing a phrase from the musical, and I will share it on the day of the event, then I’ll remove it never to be heard again.

If you have any other questions or special requests, you can post them in the comments, and I’ll try to answer them to the best of my ability.

Looking forward to seeing you at the event!

Mili

*The Artist’s Edition allows you to download all the artwork from the book in a high enough resolution you can print at home.

Mili Fay, an award winning artist, trained as a classical animator at Sheridan College, but when computer animation took over the field, she decided that she loved drawing more than animating. In November of 2011 she created Mili Fay Art determined to support the world one artwork at a time. Today, she passionately creates imaginative artwork and stories, always graced with a humorous modern twist.

Currently, Mili is working on an epic YA fantasy series, Warriors of Virtue, about a reluctant princess, Lauraliee, who learns to become a queen as she defends Ardan from dragon-people (people who turn into dragons).
