This gallery features Mili Fay’s favorite pages from her first picture book, Animals In My Hair.  All of the illustrations were created traditionally: watercolor and acrylic ink on rag drawing paper.

“In 2008 I overheard my mother tell my father that he should get a haircut because his hair was like a forest. This expression struck me as being rather funny. What would it be like if someone’s hair really was a forest? Surely animals would be living in it? But why would they do so?

Because their own homes were destroyed, of course!

This is how the idea for Animals In My Hair was born.” Mili Fay

Taken to a hair salon by his mother, the little boy is the only one not startled by the sudden appearance of endangered animals tumbling from his curly hair! Welcome to the craziest haircut adventure ever!

Animal In My Hair may look like a picture book, but it is in fact an entertainment system for the whole family:

  • Babies love the rhythm of the language; written in free verse, the story can be read within 5 minutes, making it a perfect bedtime choice.
  • Animals In My Hair is 58 pages in length; it has over 80% more illustrations than a regular picture book, allowing children and adults to visually read the book.
  • School children love discovering colors, numbers, and lesser-known endangered animals, and some of their habitats and diet (includes peary caribou, greater prairie chickens, swift foxes, pygmy short-horned lizards…)
  • The cleverest readers can seek out visual puzzles hiding throughout the book, then check online if they’ve discovered them all.

Each hardcover book comes with a free AIMH MEMBERSHIP, where readers can go to learn more facts about each featured animal, find answers to visual puzzles, download coloring pages and art prints,…

30% of all profits will be donated to wildlife conservation through the Toronto Zoo.
