Will You Be My Valentine?

Growing up, I found Valentine’s Day irritating. There was always the pressure of gifting and receiving cards, as if one’s worth depended on how many cards one got.

As I grew older, some of my friends became obsessed with having a boyfriend or a girlfriend for the day.

Then, we all became cynical; saying that the holiday was invented to sell cards in February…

What does Valentine’s Day mean to you?

Love.

In my opinion, that is what Valentine’s Day is about.

I do not mean romantic love with the significant other, but love we feel towards anyone or anything. Whether that is your favorite toy, a pet, a friend, a family member, a boyfriend, girlfriend, teacher,… Love is an infinite commodity, that costs us nothing to give, and makes us deliriously happy to receive.

Therefore, I challenge you this Valentine’s Day to remember all the people that you love, be grateful for them being in your life, and tell them how much they mean to you.

I do not need a holiday to celebrate all the people who make my life worth living. I’m grateful for them every single day, and I’ll love them for as long as I have the capacity to love.

In recent years, I’m also grateful to all the wonderful people I’ve never met who follow me online, who support my career, and who are there for me whenever I feel alone. It’s curious, but though I have not seen most of them face to face, I feel as if they are kindred spirits. I think of some of them as friends, and to show my gratitude I’m hosting a contest on Instagram. I’ll be raffling off an original couple’s portrait, so if you do have Instagram check it out.

Valentine’s Day has always been just a day to me. However, I’m happy to support a holiday that celebrates love. With the state our world is currently in, it’s nice to stop for a moment and remember John Lennon’s wise words: “All you need is love. Love is all you need.”
